The Health Problems To Be Aware of As You Age

Unfortunately, it is part of life that as you get older you are more prone to certain illnesses and ailments. Your body takes longer to recover from injuries and is perhaps not as agile as it used to be. Ensuring you maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet and doing some exercise will certainly be beneficial.

High Blood Pressure

High Blood pressure can alter as you get older. It is important to keep track of as it can lead to other health problems such as strokes and heart attacks. At least 1 in 3 adults in the US aged 75 and over experience high blood pressure. There are simple steps you can take to help reduce symptoms, including reducing your salt intake, exercising, eating a healthy balanced diet, and getting enough sleep.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a fairly common feature as you age. In the US at least 1 out of 3 aged between 65 and 74 experience symptoms of hearing loss. This then increases to 1 out of 2 people after the age of 75. The sounds you hear slowly start to fade away. Luckily it is easy to treat with hearing aids, by removing any earwax, cochlear implants, and surgery in more extreme cases.

Osteoporosis

Over time your bones can become weaker and more brittle as you age. Eating a diet rich in calcium and taking supplements can help strengthen your bones. It can affect both men and women but for some reason, white and Asian women postmenopausal are more at risk of developing Osteoporosis later on in life. The important thing is to keep exercising as the more sedentary lifestyle you lead, the worse it can get.

Arthritis

Another joint problem that can occur is Arthritis. This is where your joints begin to feel painful when you move them, which can occur in your hands, feet, lower back, hips and knees. It is one of the most common types of disability in the US, affecting at least 50 million adults. As there is no cure for this, treatment is usually provided in the form of anti-inflammatory medication that helps to relieve the pain.

Mobility Issues

If you find yourself living in a residential care home because you have no one to look after you and mobility is an issue, you want to make sure that you read reviews beforehand to ensure that the home knows how to protect seniors. You want to feel happy and secure in your new place as it is going to be your permanent home from now on. It can be difficult acknowledging that you need assistance to cope with everyday tasks, but it is better to have skilled help than struggle on your own after all.
