I Just Read Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim

This is not your typical book about slavery and plantation life. It is a book about love and hope in a place where there was very little of both.  It is the story of a child who loved her “mother” and a mother whose child is ripped from her arms. It is the story of women trapped in a life that was not their own, during a time when the innocence of childhood could lead to someone losing their life or worse.

This is the story of Lisbeth who was taken from her mother at birth and handed to a woman who would be her “mother”. This is also the story of Mattie who loved a child who was not her own but desperately ached for her own child who was taken from her. This is the story of Rebecca who was torn from her mother and forced to work her fingers to the bone who loved her sister so deeply that she took in her child. This is the story of Mrs. Ann who was forced into a “good” marriage and required to play the dutiful wife to her husband regardless of his dalliances or proclivities. This is the story of Emily the shameful secret hidden away right under their noses, speculating but never questioning as she served and obeyed.

This is the story of women constrained by society’s notions who tried to survive under harsh circumstances in a world that was dominated by men – husbands, masters, slave traders, and overseers. It is the story of hope for a better future, the dream of freedom and the willingness to do what has to be done to find it.

This book is a must read it will give you a deeper more meaningful understanding of slavery beyond that of what you’re taught from a history book. It is one of the only books I have found that tells the story from the perspective of the women both slave and “free”. It’s a very powerful book and I am glad that after my mom finished it she recommended it to me.

  1. So poignant and relevant even today, especially because of the turmoil caused by children taken from their parents down on the Mexican border!

    1. Yes, it is still very relevant today. The US has a history of taking children that goes all the way back to the colonies. Many people are not aware of this or choose not to acknowledge it. We as a country need to do better. We have over 200 years of proof that separating families does not work and only leads to a generation of adults who are lost and angry.
